hummingbird feeder!

Hurry! Offer ends Saturday,September 20, 2008

Take advantage of this time of year to increase the number of hummingbirds visiting your backyard.

A lot of people this year were concerned about the lack of hummingbirds at their feeders while others made comments about many hummers at their nectar feeders. For some reason hummingbirds were not evenly distributed around the area this summer. If you had a lack of hummingbirds even though you did everything right , fall may be the time you can enjoy a real show..

At this time of year the number of hummingbirds in our area may be almost doubled in size. If the small birds had a successful breeding season you could be seeing more hummingbirds right now. Mom, Dad and the kids could all be visiting feeders.

But wait! There's more. As fall migration gets closer the numbers can increase even more with hummingbirds from the north beginning their annual journies back to the tropics. First you will notice lotsof competition at the feeders with adult males as the dominant birds. They're the ones with the bright red throats. Young males may have slight streaks or speckles on their throats while females will be all white underneath. Adult males will migrate south a few weeks before the females and juveniles. This is when you may see more harmony at the feeders. That's right . you may see multiple hummingbirds sharing a feeder for the first time this year.

This is the time to keep feeders full and clean all the way to the end of October when most hummingbirds will be gone. The best rule of thumb is to keep your feeder(s) up until you haven't seen a hummingbird for at least a week. Hummingbirds will not stay because you leave your feeder up and may actually help late migrating hummers during cold fall weather.

The show is not over, it may be just beginning.
